Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Best Controller Settings

The best Modern Warfare 4 controller settings can improve your aim, movement, and overall responsiveness. The default setup works fine, but adjusting sensitivity, deadzones, aim assist, and movement can give you a more consistent experience.

These settings provide a strong starting point for multiplayer and competitive play, with room to adjust based on your controller and playstyle.

Start with your basic controller configuration before adjusting the more advanced aiming and movement options. Tactical is a good button layout for players who want easier access to movement actions.

Stick Layout should stay on Default unless you already use a different configuration.

Start with 1.65 for both horizontal and vertical sensitivity. This is a strong baseline that gives you enough speed to turn quickly without making precise tracking unnecessarily difficult. If 1.65 feels too fast or too slow, adjust it gradually rather than making a large jump.

Controller Vibration should be kept off. Turning it off removes unnecessary controller feedback and gives you a cleaner aiming experience.

Deadzones control how far you need to move the stick before MW4 registers it. Lower minimums feel more responsive, but push them too low on an aging controller and stick drift starts showing through.

Start with Left Stick Min and Right Stick Min at 3, a Left Stick Max of 65, and a Right Stick Max of 99.

For trigger deadzones, start at 0–5. Lower values make the triggers respond sooner, while slightly higher values can help prevent unintended inputs.

If your controller drifts, don't force the minimum to stay at 3 — raise it gradually until the drift disappears.

Set ADS Sensitivity Multiplier to 0.95 as a starting point — close enough to your normal look sensitivity to feel consistent, while still giving finer control when aiming. Too slow while ADS? Bump it up. Overshooting targets? Lower it.

Set ADS Sensitivity Transition Timing to Instant so the sensitivity shift kicks in the moment you aim down sights. Set Aim Response Curve Type to Dynamic for a balance between precise micro-adjustments and fast flicks onto a target.

Keep both Target Aim Assist and ADS Aim Assist enabled. These options matter most for controller players, since they help maintain more consistent target tracking.

If you're trying to improve your aim, avoid changing sensitivity and aim-assist settings at the same time. Start with the recommended values, play several matches, then make one adjustment at a time so you can tell what's actually helping.

Also set Motion Sensor Function Behavior to Off unless you specifically prefer motion-based aiming.

Turning on Tactical Sprint Assist helps you enter a sprint as soon as you push the stick. Mantle Assist, on the other hand, is usually better left off if you want full manual control over when your character climbs over obstacles versus when you just want to walk past them.

Corner Slice — personal preference. Leave it enabled or disabled based on which visual presentation you find easier to play with.

Slide/Dive Behavior — Tap to Slide or Hybrid gives you more direct control over these movement actions without requiring unnecessary button combinations. Pairing this with Slide Maintains Sprint set to On keeps your momentum going after a slide rather than dropping you back to a jog.

In the advanced movement settings, setting Sprint/Tactical Sprint Behavior to Toggle rather than Hold reduces stick fatigue during long matches, and setting Tactical Sprint Activation to Single Tap Sprint lets you hit max speed with one press instead of a double-tap. Turning off Auto Move Forward and Auto Door Peek keeps those actions under your direct control instead of the game guessing your intent.

Set Aim Down Sight Behavior to Hold rather than Toggle for more precise, split-second control over when you're actually aiming — this matters most in close-range gunfights and can make them easier to manage. Similarly, set Manual Fire Behavior to Press (rather than Toggle) to keep single-fire weapons responsive to individual trigger pulls.

Set Equipment Behavior to Hold to prevent accidentally throwing a grenade or deploying gear with a stray tap.

The recommended PS5 and Xbox settings are essentially the same, since both platforms offer the same sensitivity, deadzone, aim-assist, and movement options. The main difference is button naming: PlayStation uses L2/R2 and L1/R1, while Xbox uses LT/RT and LB/RB.

Whether you're on PS5 or Xbox, start with the same sensitivity and deadzone values above, and adjust them only if your controller or playstyle calls for something different.

These settings provide a strong starting point for aim and movement in MW4. Fine-tune sensitivity and deadzones gradually, then stick with your setup long enough to build muscle memory.
