MW4 – Everything We Know Before Launch

Last updated:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is almost here. Infinity Ward has revealed most of the game's major features, including its Korean Peninsula campaign, the reconfiguring Kill Block mode, a large-scale Ground War experience, and the return of DMZ.

This guide brings together everything confirmed ahead of launch, including the release date, maps, game modes, DMZ's Hajin Exclusion Zone, Warzone integration, and available editions.

MW4 Release Date and Platforms

The release date is Friday, October 23, 2026. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, Battle.net, and Xbox PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Players who pre-order can access the Campaign early starting October 16, one week before the full launch.

Campaign: War on the Korean Peninsula

Modern Warfare 4's campaign begins with a full-scale North Korean invasion of South Korea. Players follow Private Park and a young South Korean squad fighting through the collapsing front lines.

The story also follows Captain Price, who is operating outside the system after the events of the previous game. His personal mission eventually connects to the wider conflict.

Campaign locations include Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai, giving the story a broader international scope. Activision describes the campaign as combining large-scale battles, covert operations, close-quarters encounters, and cinematic set pieces.

MW4 Maps and Multiplayer

Modern Warfare 4 launches with 12 core 6v6 maps, alongside dedicated Gunfight maps and larger spaces designed for Ground War. The multiplayer offering also includes Kill Block, Party Modes, and other traditional playlists.

The Open Beta gave players an early look at several of the game's maps and systems, including Kill Block and Ground War.

MW4 Game Modes

The game modes cover several different styles of Call of Duty multiplayer. Traditional 6v6 Multiplayer forms the core experience, while Kill Block introduces changing arenas and Gunfight rules.

Ground War provides larger battles with vehicles and objectives, while DMZ offers an extraction-focused experience outside traditional Multiplayer. Party Modes and additional playlists are also planned, giving players several ways to play beyond standard 6v6 matches.

MW4 Kill Block

Kill Block is the game's most unusual multiplayer addition. It takes place inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training Facility, a live-fire environment built around three modular sections called Slabs.

The facility contains two End Slabs and one Central Slab. These sections combine into different configurations, creating more than 500 possible layouts at launch. Routes, sightlines, cover, and engagement areas can change throughout a single match as a result.

Kill Block launches with 3v3 Gunfight and the new 10v10 Gunfight. These are single-life rounds using shared randomized Loadouts rather than traditional custom Loadouts.

After the second round, the three Slabs reconfigure into a new layout, and the shared Loadout is randomized again. This process repeats every two rounds until one team reaches six round wins. If neither side has been eliminated before the timer expires, an Overtime Flag appears.

Activision also plans to expand the facility's use with additional multiplayer modes during post-launch seasons.

MW4 Ground War: Combat Outpost

Ground War returns with a new experience called Combat Outpost, combining large-scale infantry combat with vehicles and objective-based battles.

The Open Beta featured Combat Outpost on Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium, giving players an early preview of the large-scale multiplayer experience.

Ground War sits alongside the smaller 6v6 playlists and Kill Block, giving MW4 a wider range of multiplayer formats.

MW4 DMZ Returns

One of the biggest surprises is the return of DMZ. Instead of Zombies, Modern Warfare 4 brings back Call of Duty's extraction-focused experience as one of its three major launch pillars, alongside Campaign and Multiplayer.

Players deploy into an open combat environment, complete objectives, collect resources, encounter enemies and rival Operators, and attempt to extract with their rewards. Dynamic conditions and changing objectives are designed to make every deployment unpredictable.

MW4 Hajin Map

Hajin is the main DMZ Exclusion Zone in Modern Warfare 4, a persistent open-world environment connected to the aftermath of the campaign.

The latest official DMZ update, published October 5, 2026, provides a detailed look at Hajin's environments, major points of interest, enemy forces, vehicles, HUD information, and deployment systems. The Forward Operating Base also acts as the player's command center for progression and preparation.

DMZ combines Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player encounters, and progression across deployments.

Warzone Integration and Season 1

Warzone will integrate Modern Warfare 4 content beginning with Season 1, which Activision says will arrive shortly after launch. An exact Season 1 date hasn't been confirmed as of October 7.

The Open Beta also previewed the Zodiac Resurgence map, and more MW4 content is expected to connect with Warzone as Season 1 approaches.

Treat an early-November launch as speculation rather than confirmed, at least until Activision announces an official date.

MW4 Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses

Modern Warfare 4 has Standard and Vault editions. The official Vault Edition includes one season of BlackCell, the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack, the Special Forces Operator Pack, the Signature Weapon Collection, and the DMZ Deployment Bonus.

Pre-orders also include Campaign Early Access starting October 16, while eligible previous Call of Duty owners can receive a 10% Vault Edition loyalty discount under Activision's stated conditions.

Modern Warfare 4 is shaping up to be a broad launch, with a campaign set against a Korean Peninsula conflict, 12 core multiplayer maps, the experimental Kill Block system, Ground War, and the return of DMZ.

The Hajin map is particularly important for DMZ, while Kill Block gives multiplayer a constantly changing combat space. With the release date set for October 23, the remaining major questions concern post-launch content and the exact timing of Season 1.
