The wireless controller market has moved fast. Features that were considered premium two years ago, Hall Effect thumbsticks, low-latency 2.4GHz connections, high polling rates, are now the baseline expectation for any serious build. Here's what actually matters in 2026, what to look for, and what to ignore.

1. Wireless technology: 2.4GHz vs Bluetooth

The first thing to check on any wireless controller is how it actually connects. Not all wireless is the same, and the difference between connection types is one of the most consequential specs on the list.

2.4GHz wireless uses a dedicated USB dongle and a reserved radio frequency, keeping latency low and consistent. It's the connection type used in competitive gaming for good reason: it's fast, stable, and doesn't compete with the other Bluetooth devices in your home. Bluetooth is more convenient for multi-device use and works without a dongle, but introduces more latency and is more susceptible to interference in busy RF environments.

For PC gaming specifically, 2.4GHz should be the primary connection. Bluetooth is a useful secondary option for flexibility. Any controller that offers only Bluetooth is making a trade-off that will show up in competitive play. Look for controllers that support both, and confirm which one is the recommended gaming connection before buying.

2. Polling rate

Polling rate is how often the controller sends input data to your PC, measured in Hz. At 250Hz, inputs are reported every 4ms. At 500Hz, every 2ms. At 1,000Hz (1K), every millisecond. The higher the polling rate, the less time your input spends waiting to be registered.

1,000Hz is the current standard for competitive PC gaming and the figure to look for if input responsiveness is a priority. It's worth checking whether the 1K polling rate applies in wireless mode as well as wired, since some controllers only achieve it when plugged in. Look for controllers with at least two rear paddles and full remapping capability. Four paddles gives you more flexibility across genres.
