Modern Warfare 4 is changing how players build weapons. The game still gives players a full Gunsmith system, but the new Gunny feature can build a usable weapon setup for you in seconds.
Instead of testing every muzzle, barrel, stock, grip, and magazine yourself, Gunny recommends builds based on the attachments you've already unlocked. It currently offers Short Range, Balanced, and Long Range options.
That makes building a strong loadout much easier, especially while you're still leveling a weapon. Gunny is also handy when you want to test a new gun without spending several minutes working through every attachment combination.
Traditional Gunsmith customization is still important, though. Gunny is optional, and every recommended build can be changed manually. Apex Attachments also sit separately from normal attachment slots, giving fully leveled weapons another way to change how they behave.
Best for: Run-and-gun players who want to fight constantly at close range.
The PPSH-41 is a strong choice for this role. It currently ranks below the ISO Nightshade and X-58 NYX in beta rankings, but it's built around fast close-range fighting and gives aggressive players plenty of room to experiment.
For Gunny, start with the Short Range build. This is the closest match to a traditional rush setup, since Gunny is designed to generate builds around different engagement ranges.
If you switch to manual customization, focus on movement and close-range handling rather than adding too many range-focused parts. A current PPSH-41 build uses the Hanbit Chimmuk-INTR barrel, FSS TAC90 Grip, 53 Round Mag, No Stock, and 7.62 Tokarev Hollow Point.
The 53 Round Mag is useful when you're fighting several enemies around an objective. No Stock keeps the build focused on fast handling, while the underbarrel grip gives you more control.
For perks, Ninja, Fast Hands, and Blood Rush fit this style well. Ninja reduces footstep noise, Fast Hands speeds up reloads and weapon swaps, and Blood Rush improves movement and stamina after eliminations.
Use a Stim and a fast lethal such as a Throwing Knife if your class allows them. The goal is simple: move first, win the first gunfight, and immediately challenge the next player.
Best for: Players who want one weapon that can handle most fights.
The M4 is the safest starting point for this playstyle. It currently ranks as the top multiplayer weapon in its beta data, with the highest listed pick rate among the weapons tracked.
For Gunny, choose the Balanced recommendation. This gives you a starting build without pushing the weapon too heavily toward close or long range.
The M4 should focus on recoil control, clean aiming, and reliable mid-range damage. A muzzle that reduces vertical kick is useful if you find the first few shots hard to control, and pairing it with a clean optic helps if the iron sights don't work for you.
This is where weapon builds become more useful than simply copying one meta setup. Your ideal M4 may need a small change depending on the map. Add more mobility for smaller maps, or more range and recoil control when you're playing larger lanes.
For perks, Quick Fix, Fast Hands, and Scavenger make a strong general setup. Quick Fix helps you recover after fights, Fast Hands improves handling between engagements, and Scavenger keeps your ammunition supply moving. All three are available in the current beta perk system.
For equipment, use a Frag and Flash combination. It gives you tools for clearing rooms and forcing enemies away from strong positions.
Best for: Flankers, solo players, and anyone who prefers surprise attacks.
For this style, the ISO Nightshade is a strong starting point. It ranks as an Absolute Meta SMG and second overall in its beta multiplayer list.
Choose Gunny's Short Range option if you want a mobile flanker, then manually add a suppressor if the available build doesn't already give you the sound profile you want.
One current community ISO Nightshade build uses the FSS Crackdown muzzle, ZLR Carbon-900 barrel, FSS TAC90 Grip, Demo STP-1 rear grip, and XRK Clutch-LS laser.
The important part of this build is keeping the weapon easy to control while preserving enough mobility to move around the enemy team.
For perks, Ghost, Ninja, and Cold-Blooded are natural choices when available. Ghost helps keep you hidden from reconnaissance tools, Ninja reduces footstep noise, and Cold-Blooded protects you from several detection systems.
Best for: Holding objectives, defending lanes, and controlling power positions.
The Type 73 is the LMG to watch for this role. It currently sits in the Contender tier in beta rankings, while the Finn LMG is listed as Very Good.
For Gunny, use the Long Range recommendation, then adjust the weapon around sustained fire. Your priority should be recoil control, magazine capacity, and range.
An extended magazine is useful for objective defense, since it reduces how often you need to reload during a push. A recoil-focused underbarrel and a heavier barrel can also make long bursts easier to control.
This class setup should use Overkill, Fast Hands, and Scavenger if you want a second primary and better ammunition management. Overkill lets you carry two primary weapons, while Fast Hands improves reloads and weapon swaps.
Use a Munitions Box when available, and choose defensive equipment for the objective. Don't play this class like an SMG. Find a strong position, watch a useful lane, and make enemies pay for crossing it.
Best for: Quick-scoping and long-range map control.
The Signal 50 is currently the top-ranked sniper. Choose Gunny's Long Range build as your starting setup. For Gunsmith, prioritize fast ADS, aiming stability, and quick reloads. Use a variable zoom optic for large maps, or a simple optic for faster quick-scopes.
Pair it with an SMG or AR for close fights, and use Overkill, Fast Hands, and Focus where available.
Gunny makes it easy to build a strong weapon without spending time testing every attachment. Gunsmith gives you more control when you want to fine-tune your setup. Pick your build based on your playstyle, map, and range, then adjust a few attachments until the weapon feels right.
